Altalena: A New Perspective on Music, Well-Being, and Artistic Growth

When I founded Altalena, I envisioned a space where musicians could grow not only as artists but as whole human beings. As a pianist, I have experienced firsthand the challenges that come with a life devoted to music—the long hours of practice, the mental and physical strain, the pressure to constantly perform at our peak. Too often, the focus in music education is solely on technical mastery, while the emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of the artist is overlooked.

At Altalena, we are changing that. Along with my dear friend and co-artistic director, Mihály Berecz, we have created a space where top-level education meets a holistic approach to artistry. Our mission is to provide young musicians with not only the finest musical training but also the tools they need to sustain a long, fulfilling, and healthy career.

A New Vision for Musical Education

The Altalena Summer Academy, held in the breathtaking surroundings of Tuscany, is at the heart of our vision. Here, students receive intensive training with world-renowned professors, participate in collaborative performances, and engage in activities designed to strengthen their mental, physical, and emotional well-being. This is not just another summer course—it is a transformative experience. We emphasize deep practice over endless repetition, prioritizing focus, balance, and mindfulness as essential elements of artistic growth.

Too often, musicians push themselves to their limits without considering the long-term consequences. At Altalena, we address this by integrating wellness practices into our program. Through yoga sessions, sports activities, wellness seminars, and discussions on mental and physical health, we offer students a sustainable way to build their careers. We don’t believe in separating the artist from the person—one cannot thrive without the other.

A Community of Artists Supporting Each Other

Beyond the lessons and masterclasses, we are building something deeper—a community. Music can be a solitary pursuit, but it does not have to be a lonely one. At Altalena, we create an open, welcoming environment where musicians can share their experiences, support one another, and grow together. We encourage honest discussions about the realities of the profession, helping students navigate the pressures and uncertainties of a musical career with resilience and confidence.

Our philosophy extends beyond the summer academy. Through our Altalena Artists Collective, we connect emerging professionals who share an inspiring vision for the future of the arts. These musicians, our ambassadors, help spread the values of Altalena worldwide, proving that artistic excellence and well-being can—and must—go hand in hand.
